Susan Dudley 2.jpg

Name: Susan Gail Dudley

Where are you from: Columbia, MO

How long have you been showing horses?  I started in 4-H several years ago doing the all-around events.  Once I graduated from college, I bought my first registered horse and started barrel racing and roping.

How long have you been in Missouri? I have lived in Missouri all my life.

What is your favorite horse show?  My favorite horse show to watch/attend is the NRHA futurity.  The people are always fun and friendly and supportive of each other.

What is your favorite event to show in? I really enjoy the Ranch Riding; it challenges each horse rider combo.

What is your favorite class to watch? I love to watch the reining, especially when my husband or Shannon is showing.

Who is your all-time favorite horse? And why?  I can’t name just one.  I have been very fortunate to ride several very nice horses that have each taught me things to make me a better rider.  My first registered horse “Bailey” taught me so many things.  He gave me the confidence to try about anything.  He could go to a rodeo and win a check in the barrels and the breakaway roping…if I made the catch.   The other horse that has a special place in my heart is Smart Norma Jean.  She always gives 110% anytime I ask.  She has taught me that hard work does pay off.  She is not easy to ride, but is always willing to try.

If you are not at a horse show, what would we find you doing? I am an Assistant Principal/ Athletic Director at New Bloomfield R-III School District, so you will find me either at school or at a ball game cheering on the “Wildcats”.

Do you have another job…besides taking care of your horses? Taking care of my husband.

Favorite food? Anything my husband cooks because I don’t like to cook.

Favorite restaurant? Jazz, it’s a Cajun restaurant in Columbia, MO.

Favorite fun class at a horse show? Dog races, our dog Lettie was the overall all winner once and Jim didn’t buy her in the Calcutta!

Favorite quote?  “Oh Shit…that didn’t work” Jim Dudley and  “If it is to be, it is up to me.”  William Johnsen.

What is your dream vacation? With or without a horse, you see, the trailer is so often attached.  With a horse might be Sun Circuit, without a horse, Europe to visit our friends.

Tell us something most people don’t know about you? I had a World Champion Halter as well as a Reserve World Champion Lunge Liner.  Also, I attended William Woods University with the intention to ride horses, but in order to pay for my education; I was offered a full ride scholarship to play basketball.  This did not allow much time for riding as planed so I did not major in Equestrian Science.

One piece of advice you would like to share with exhibitors who are just getting started? Please ask questions, I was always afraid of asking questions, but I am always willing to talk to anyone who needs help or advice.
