Missouri Quarter Horse Youth Association - March 2020 News

The weather is getting warmer, so lucky for us that means the MQHA Maple Leaf Show is approaching! It was great to see all the youth at the Winter Blast! Congratulations to all who showed and a sincere thank you to everyone that was able to help in any way! It makes the workload a lot more attainable when everyone is willing to help. Because the Maple Leaf is expected to be much bigger than last year, make sure to get your stalls reserved. Also, An Equine Production just released an improved schedule for Maple Leaf. Any information regarding the Maple Leaf can be found here.

Once again, we hosted our horse judging clinic and contest at the MQHA Winter Blast. We featured a beginner and advanced clinic, hosted by, horse judging coach and college instructor, Jamie Gross on Friday. A contest followed on Saturday morning. We even gained a few new memberships from the experience! Thank you to all who helped by lending your time and horses to assist with the classes, as well as a special thank you to the Eddy Family for all their time and effort into making the judging clinic and contest run smoothly and successfully! MQHYA also hosted a taco night fundraiser. Plates were sold at $5 a piece and all food was donated through our awesome members! Thank you to all who were able to help in any way, shape, or form at this event! Our taco night event raised a total of $400! This is a great way to start off the show season!

Our MQHA and MQHYA apparel is still available for sale! We have MQHA and MQHYA t-shirts, long sleeve t’s and quarter-zip sweatshirts in multiple color options. If you are looking for some MQH(Y)A apparel, contact the MQHYA Facebook page and we will be able to ship that right to your front door! We will have the items available for purchase at the upcoming MQHA Maple Leaf and Gateway Classic horse shows. Plans for the selling and advertising of the apparel will be coming closer to the show so be on the lookout. This is a great fundraiser for MQHYA and an awesome way to show your MQHA spirit!

Here is our fundraiser/youth activity plan for the Maple Leaf show:

 MQHA Maple Leaf
March 26-29 | National Equestrian Center, Lake St. Louis

We will have a table in Arena A area selling MQHA and MQHYA apparel. We need youth members to help work the table so if you are interested in helping, contact Cara or myself!

In addition to the apparel, MQHYA will be hosting the Trainer Horsemanship Challenge on Friday evening!

★       We will take nominations on Thursday(26th) and Friday(27th) during the show.

★       An initial nomination is $20 per trainer. Jars will be set up for each nominated trainer. Trainers can continue to be 'nominated' by placing any value of money in their respective jar.

★       A board will be kept tracking where each trainer is at compared to the other trainers as far as donation amounts.

★       The eight trainers with the highest nomination (most money) will compete in the horsemanship challenge at the end of the show on Friday(27th) following the horsemanship and during the fish fry exhibitor party.

★       The eight trainers will be on horses in the arena and we will Calcutta each trainer. We will pay the purchaser of the winning trainer AND the purchaser of the 4th place winning trainer. MQHYA will keep 20% of the total Calcutta earnings. Then, the remaining 80% will be split between the purchaser of 1st and 4th place, 60% and 40% to each respectively.

★       The first-place trainer will take home $50. (These rules are subject to discussion. Please reach out to Cara if you have ideas for this!)

★       Be sure to tell your trainer to start practicing their horsemanship skills!

We will need youth to help work the nomination table throughout the day on Thursday and Friday and then of course during the activity Friday night so please reach out to Cara or myself if you are able to help and if any time restrictions. Also, directors at large and anyone else who would like to help, please think about making 1-2 posters each to hang around the NEC to promote this event. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Cara or I and we would love to help you help us! I have attached the basics of the challenge at the end of this newsletter.

Youth Excellence Seminar

Join us as we ignite the Power of YOUth at the 2020 Bank of America Youth Excellence Seminar (YES) June 29-July 1 in Amarillo, Texas!

Registration is now available for YES 2020 here. (Recognize the youth members featured on the AQHA webpage for YES?!) The priority registration deadline is May 15. AQHYA is pleased to share that we have an online registration option this year. Participants may complete the online form for an expedited registration process with credit card payment, or they may download a PDF form and mail or email it to the AQHA Youth Department with check or credit card information. Youth participants will need to complete the online form with a parent/guardian.

AQHYA is also excited to announce Amberley Snyder as the keynote speaker at YES. Amberley is a well-known rodeo champion and public speaker who motivates others by sharing her own unique story of determination and persistence. At 19, Amberley was in a tragic car accident that left her paralyzed from the waist down, but that has not stopped her from achieving her dreams, including riding her horse again and competing in rodeos across the United States. In addition to sharing her story at events and rodeo competitions across the globe, Amberley’s story was also documented in the 2019 Netflix Original Film, Walk.Ride.Rodeo. Amberley has turned her tragedy into triumph and is inspiring all of America to “Get Back on the Horse.”

The tentative agenda and Guide to Campaigning are also available on the website however, you should check back often for any updates to these two resources.

If you are planning to attend YES, please let Youth Advisor, Cara Harmon know so she can include you with our team travel plans! It is such a life-changing experience, so I encourage all to go if your summer allows for it.

It is going to be a fantastic year for MQHYA! It is never too late to get involved. Through various fundraisers and events, we can always use volunteers! Always feel free to contact Cara or myself if you have any questions, ideas or concerns! Let’s ignite the power of YOUth and have an awesome year!
